The glomerulus is the basic filtering unit of the kidney. Glomeruli are the largest part of the nephron. Glomerular lesions allow filtration of larger serum proteins. The presence of albumin in the urine is a sure sign of glomerular abnormality. Patients are usually unaware of proteinuria, although it may make urine froth easily. Moderate amounts of low molecular weight protein are normally filtered at the glomerulus. These proteins are normally reabsorbed by tubular cells so that less than 150 mg/dl should appear in urine. Low molecular weight proteins appearing in the urine in larger quantities than this point to failure of reabsorption by damaged tubular cells. ...
